Moose Cafe

Restaurants

It’s time to plant mums and pansies here in the Piedmont, so I made my annual fall trip to the Farmer’s Market on Sunday morning for supplies. It was a gorgeous fall morning, bright and sunny with a cobalt blue sky – and nippy! I decided to warm my belly and start my day out right with a country breakfast at the Moose Cafe, the latest restaurant addition to the Piedmont Triad Farmer’s Market. The Moose Cafe offers country fare, and claims to specialize in breakfast – particularly biscuits and apple butter. Their house specialty is the ‘Moose Cake’, a huge 8-inch pancake (the size of a dinner plate and about 1/3 inch thick). They claim to be runners-up in the 2008 News & Record Readers’ Choice Awards.

There are no Moose in North Carolina. WTF.

The wait staff was friendly, but a bit scruffy and not uniformly dressed. The place certainly felt more like The Waffle House than IHOP. I ordered a large breakfast, featuring all of the house specialties, and a coffee. The coffee was weak, the biscuit was grossly underbaked (and huge), the potatoes were unremarkable, and the giant Moose Cake was so large that it was chewy – no help for it, I suppose. The Apple Butter was indeed a treat – if only there had been something palatable to spread it on. The food was very reasonably priced (Thank Goodness), which really only helped insofar as it allowed me to justify taking only a few bites before giving up. Our first restaurant review and I am more dissatisfied than I can remember being, tucking into breakfast. I mean, have you seen me? A body like this does not just happen – plenty of exercise and lots of good food are required! I was so disappointed that I actually picked up a comment card. Perhaps the folks at the Moose Cafe will invite me back for a second go. The Piedmont Triad Farmer’s Market (http://www.ncfarmfresh.com) is a fabulous establishment and an enjoyable day trip for the family – Let’s step it up a little, folks.

Theodore Roosevelt wrote: ‘It’s not the critic who counts’. His was an ode to the man who does, rather than to the man who sits idly by. Well, Mr. Roosevelt didn’t live in the 21st century, surrounded by 24-hour news media, where ‘multi-tasking’ has evolved past being a Corporate America catch-phrase and is now a life strategy for frazzled soccer moms. We don't have much 'sitting idly' time, and what little we have must be used wisely!
